Crete holiday 2013 – Day 3
10.27
Visited the south of the island. Not a long drive but really stunning scenery.
This might be an even better gorge than Cheddar.
Found ourselves on a windy road to a small bay.
And it was pleasantly surprising.
With great views from the taverns.
Shame they could make a drink to save their lives, must have been a Greek thing, but only the coke was really pleasant.
Although a little rough the beach was clean and the water calm. Does off quickly so little people are soon out of their depth. Water was can but cold and near the beach very cloudy. Further out much clearer. Small amount of fish life, nothing special.
Large car park, which isn’t charged for (October anyway).
Friendly wildlife too.
Then off to the neighbouring bay.
Sand much finger and water warmer, clean and well presented with a handful of nice tavernas.
We finished up as the sun set, great day on the beach.
Back to the hotel through another gorge, this was to be eventful.
A long and winding coast road up the mountains, I wish they would put safety barriers in.
Through some poor looking villages, missed by the tourist buck. In to the gorge.
Obviously the EU still had some money to spend in Greece as the new road is quiet extensive. Must have cost a small wedge.
This went on for miles, and unlike the uk, you drive on the hardcore, is just rubble. Good job is a hire car. I’d be angry if it was the lotus.
Crete holiday 2013 – Day 2 Knossos
10.25
We drove to Knossos for the day. Really easy to get to and cheap, 12 euro for all of us. Bet an organised trip is more expensive.
Not a lot to do other than look at the ruins, but that pretty cool in its own right.
As you enter Knossos you can understand why it’s such a must see landmark of ancient history. In all honesty its just another ruined palace, but the stories of the Minotaur and the legends surrounding the labyrinth made it the first real stop on our Crete adventure. At only 12 euros for all of us out was a bargain too.
The boys loved being at the home of the legendary Minotaur, they ran around desperate to see it, although a little scared they might actually see out.
Although obviously recreated in places is one marvelous place to visit and you truthfully get to appreciate the slender and complexity of the original buildings.
If this is what the original looked like, they didn’t skimp on the colours.
The stores jars were impressive in their own rights.
The storerooms were considerable and looked like they held an impressive amount. No skimmers world here, nothing but the best for this ancient king.
The boys enjoyed themselves, history done properly.
Nicola taking pictures of the frescos.
Boys looking down into the Piano Mobile, very deep and towards the Throne Room.
Not bad for over 3000 years old.
We guessed these were bull horns.
View over the Central Court heading towards the Throne Room.
Another frescos, Nicola asked why my waistline wasn’t as tiny? Don’t get what she means?
The Throne Room, hard to know we’re the real paintings exist and the modern reproductions are, either way it’s very nice.
The Lustral Basin guessing a reconstruction but as with all nice to see in something like the original.
Boys love taking photos, hopefully they will absorb more through the pictures.
Big man by the North Entrance.
Off to see the Bull Relief, probably the most recognized past of Knossos.
Little man in one of the world’s most famous places, that’s one to keep.
Underneath the palace are some more storerooms.
